While boat arrivals to Australia have fallen, the flow of migration through temporary working visas, or 457 visas, has collapsed since last September. Data to be released by Senator Evans today will show a 47 per cent fall in 457 applications since September and a 64 per cent drop in the granting of such visas.
The 457 visa scheme is a demand-driven program in which employers apply to bring people to Australian on temporary working conditions to fill skill shortages.
The Government cut its skilled migration quota in this year's annual budget down to 108,100 from 133,500 in the last financial year.
