Pathway 1 applies to 457 visa applicants who do not currently hold a relevant Australian trade qualification.

The employee will need to complete an online Skills self evaluation available from Trades Recognition Australia’s (TRA) website. The self evaluation tool is called TradeSET. You (or the employee) must choose an approved Registered Training Organisations from the list of Trades Recognition Australia approved Registered Training Organisations to undertake an assessment of their evidence and a technical interview.

Pathway 1 has five steps. You must successfully complete each step before you move on to the next one.

Step 1 - Complete a self evaluation.

Step 2 - Choose a Registered Training Organisation.

Step 3 - Provide evidence of your skills and experience to your chosen Registered Training Organisation.

Step 4 - Participate in a Technical interview conducted in English.

Step 5 - Receive Registered Training Organisation assessment record for visa application purposes.

Step 1 - Complete a self evaluation.
A self evaluation tool (TradeSET) is provided by Trades Recognition Australia for 457 visa applicants at no cost. TradeSET will help you understand what skills and experience a person is expected to have when working as a tradesperson in Australia.

At the end of the self evaluation, you will receive a report listing your training and employment history against the competencies required for the Australian trade qualification.

You must provide the TradeSET Report to the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) you choose to conduct your formal skills assessment.

Step 2 - Choose a Registered Training Organisation.
The RTO Finder website will give you information to help you choose an approved Australian Registered Training Organisation to conduct your skills assessment. You must apply to one of the approved training organisations listed on the RTO Finder website.

Step 3 - Provide evidence of your skills and experience to your chosen Registered Training Organisation.
Find out from your chosen RTO what information you will be required to provide in support of your skills assessment. Further help about the range of acceptable evidence will also be provided in your self-assessment report.

Your Registered Training Organisation will assess the evidence you provide of your skills and employment experience. Information about this step will be provided by the training organisation.

Step 4 - Participate in a Technical Interview conducted in English.
If the evidence you provide in Step 3 is sufficient, the training organisation will offer you a technical interview. During this interview you will be required to explain details of how you developed your trade skills and how you have used them in your trade.

The assessor conducting the interview will be a qualified Australian tradesperson from your trade as well as being a qualified assessor.

The Technical Interview will be conducted in English. Interpreters are not allowed to assist in the interview. The English language used by the assessor in the technical interview will be the same as the language required to work in the trade in Australia.

Step 5 - Receive a Trades Recognition Australia approved Registered Training Organisation assessment record for visa application purposes.
The skills assessment is completed when the Registered Training Organisation provides you with a document that describes your skills and experience, and how this matches to Australian competencies and qualifications in your trade.

If you are successful in your skills assessment, you can take that document provided to you by the training organisation to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to apply for a subclass 457 visa.

You will be entitled to an Australian trade qualification if the training organisation determines that you have met all the required competencies.
